National Defence Academy (NDA)



Hello my dear friends, in today's blog we are going to see some of the amazing facts about NDA.
Most of you people might have heard about this amazing academy, but how much you know about it?

Most of the people want to serve the country through armed forces, but what it takes to get into it?
What is the age limit for getting in NDA?

Let's see some of the basic facts about NDA.

National Defence Academy is located in Khadakwasla, Pune, Maharashtra. It is the first tri-service academy.

Before its inception as NDA on 16th January, 1955, it first started its operation on 1st January as the Joint Services Wing (JSW) as the Indian Military Academy. Then it was known as the Armed Forces Academy in Dehradun.
NDA was established on 7 December 1954.

NDA is the first military academy that trains officers for the Army, Navy and Air Force.

First it was suggested that the academy should be built in Dehradun but later it decided to go for Khadakwasla, Pune because there were lakes and hills which makes it best for training. Out of 2100 cadets most of them are from Army.

About 600,000 students apply for NDA exam and only 300-400 gets into the Academy.

After completing their courses, by their choice cadets can go for Indian Military, Naval, Air Force or Officers training Academy. The exam will be conducted by UPSC, after getting shortlisted, cadets have to get ready for SSB (section selection board), which is considered as the toughest part to get into the academy.

NDA has 18 squadrons which are divided into five battalions.

Every cadet becomes the part of a particular squadron.
In every squadron there are approximately 100 to 200 cadets, and every squadron has their own nick name.

The headquarter is placed at the center of NDA campus, SUDAN BLOCK.

The most beautiful building in the campus is SUDAN BLOCK. This building was built from the donation for  the soldiers martyred for the freedom of SUDAN BLOCK during world war 2.

Asia's largest mess is in NDA.

The Asia's largest mess is situated in NDA, The fact most of the people didn't knew. Here, at a time 2100 cadets can have their meal.
Staff members are trained to serve the full mess in just 40 minutes.

Lt. Col Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, India's first individual Olympics medal winner, is a proud alumnus of the NDA's 77th Course.

He won the silver medal in the 2004 Olympics held at Athens.

The first Indian person to fly into the space Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, is also an alumnus of the NDA.

He joined the NDA as the Indian Air Force (IAF) cadet in 1966. After his achievements, in his honor NDA has named one of block after him, known as Rakesh Sharma Block.

KHAKI is the dress color of cadets.



All the cadets in NDA have the same color of their dress that is KHAKI for the atmosphere of homogeneity.
Three NDA alumni have been honored with the Param Vir Chakra, and nine other have received the Ashoka Chakra which is the highest peacetime military decoration valour, bravery or self-sacrifices away from the battlefield.



NDA passes two batches every year, giving chance for those who wants to serve for the country and continues to give the best officers to the country.

To appear in NDA, the age limit must be 16.5 to 19.5 years of age.
Most of the people might be wondering that at these ages many students live with their parents so how will they survive there? Well NDA is the best academy in India, and their work is to convert the piece of glasses into diamonds.

NDA has considered this age limit because this age period is the best for training and have the most active minds. The motto of NDA was "service before self" which was later converted into Sanskrit "सेवा परमो धर्मः"
